Hamayan which means in Hebrew, the Well(spring) came into existence in the summer of 2000 and was started by a local Melbourne Rabbi called Aryeh Goldman. Together with some chevre who wanted a really good place to pray on Shabbat, they began to embark on a journey of dvekut (clinging or closeness) with HasHem and their ideals of what constitutes a fitting place for prayer.
Over the years we have travelled from a small room in GlenEira Road (with the generous help of the Kollel Beit Hatalmud) to a house on Orrong Road (with the generous help of Mr Adler) and finally moving to the house at the back of Caulfield Shule. It is only through the help from these organisations that we can continue to daven to HasHem with simcha and shira and are able to invite people from all ages to join in with us and also maybe learn a new niggun…or two!
We thank R' Aryeh Goldman for his tireless efforts and unlimited chesed over the last 4 years. We bless him with health and Hatslacha Raba to continue to give to the community and the whole world in the unique and powerful way that he does so well.
We continue to benefit from the amazing dips from E & S Deli. Thank you so much for enriching our weekly kidushim.
Since Rosh Hashana 5766 we have a had the privilege of welcoming our new Rabbi and Rebbetzin Szmerling into our community. Each week the Rabbi gives one shiur on Tuesday nights and one shiur before davening on shabbes. It has been wonderful to hear the teachings during musaf and to get to know the family each week.
With G-D's help may the Szmerlings continue to inspire us and may they be blessed with simcha, naches from their family, growth in spiritual matters and health and are able to always sing a shira chadasha with us at Hamayan. Amen!
We are essentially a Shabbat minyan but we have many functions both at the shule and at people's homes. These include: Melave Malka's, Purim functions, All night Shavuot learning, Tisha B'Av service, Midnight slichot service, Simchat Beit Hashoeva, Simchat Torah Dinners, Chanuka Parties and musical hallels.
Our chevre are from all backgrounds, embracing the Chassidic and Misnagdish ways and essentially connecting through all the holy Rebbe's and Rav's and Rabbonim and Holy Masters. We sing the beautiful niggunim of Rav Shlomo Carlebach Z'L as well as the uplifting Breslov and Chabad nigguns and all other Jewish songs/niggunim that can be put to the words of the Tfillah. As a minyan,
we aim to make the Shabbes davening full of song so people can really hear and say the holy words properly and with Kavanah (intention). We always look for new songs to introduce to the community and try to follow the words of King David: "Sing to HasHem a new Song..."
